WORK HARD - PLAY HARDER!
Some people are born with a passion and others find one. Mine is drums. It has been that way since the day I was born. I had my first play set when I was four and I was given my first real drum set when I was six years old. Let's just say I was fortunate to have supportive and patient parents. I like to be loud. I like to hit hard. I like to play... a lot.
I studied the drum set during my early youth and when I turned 11, I convinced my brother to make a band with me. We joined forces with a childhood friend and settled on the name JEKKEL after a year. Together we put out 3 albums. "Loser Geek" was released in 2001, "Ping Pong Warriors" in 2002, and "Tastes Like" in 2004. By the time I was finishing up high school I had already played several of the venues throughout the Coachella Valley, San Diego, and Los Angeles, my favorite being the famous Whisky A Go-Go.
During the same time, I had joined and performed with school marching bands and orchestras, even attended those very cool summer band camps you hear about. I wanted to learn about every percussive instrument and explore sound. Yes, timpani are as amazing as they seem (if you didn't know that).
In the eighth grade I tried out for the high school drumline and made it. I was 5th out of 6 basses and it was obviously the best thing about high school (once I got there) besides my band. During my high school career I also had the honor of playing 2nd bass drum while being co-captains on a World Class drumline at LQHS. I moved on to become the first female snare drummer on the line and took a break my senior year to put all my focus back on my kit.
I then attended the University of Southern California for my Bachelor's in Music Business. JEKKEL released one final EP and took a hiatus as I explored the industry side of the music world. I began learning about sound design and technologies and was able to take the engineering pathway within my degree. During my undergrad I became an intern at Vagrant Records followed by Interscope/Universal. Unfortunately, in my senior year I was in a horrible car accident that put life on pause.
While recovering, I realized that I did not want to take my passion for granted. I built a home studio, earned my Masters degree and pursued a job in education while I continued to play. JEKKEL reunited and added a member for one final year of fun and a music video. In 2014, my brother, our buddy Jacob, and I joined forces with a friend in the desert and became BRIDGER. The next few years were filled with some amazing performances, competitions, and my favorite album, "Forces Against Us (2016)." We even opened for The Adicts and The Dead Kennedys. It was very cool.
I've been honored with the title of "Best Drummer" at the Coachella Valley Weekly Music Awards and together with BRIDGER "Best Punk Band," "Best New Band," "Best Album," and my most rewarding, "Best Live Performance Band." We also became finalists in the 2017 Tachevah Competition. That was a good time. Right before the pandemic, the band took a little break and like many things, it hasn't quite returned.
Since then, I have started KTZDrums. There is an album in the works as well as educational videos. It is my hope to continue to share my knowledge of and love for drums with the world. I believe that everyone has a drum beat within them. It's just up to you if you want to play it.
Stay tuned...
